Comparing the iPhone 5S and the Samsung Galaxy S5’s Fingerprint Sensor

Apple may have been the first to introduce Touch ID sensors onto their phones and devices but does it mean that they’re still the best?  Many other smartphone manufacturers have developed their own sensors to compete and they may just be even better than Apple.

It is important to note that the way the sensor works on the iPhone 5S is quite different from the Samsung Galaxy S5.  The sensor within the Samsung Galaxy is a swipe type sensor that is found beneath the home button so it is still necessary to swipe your finger across the home button to make it function.  While this can seem like a bit of a hassle the fact that it can also be used to make PayPal payments almost makes up for it.  For Apple all that is necessary to use Touch ID is to place your finger over the home button and the phone will unlock.

The biggest complaint about the Samsung Galaxy S5’s fingerprint sensor is that it is nearly impossible to use single handed.  Most users enjoy being able to use their phones single handed as often that is all that is available.  Yet, having to use both hands to unlock your phone is seriously problematic.  Additionally, because it is a slide sensor it is often necessary to have to try multiple times to get it to work.  For many this is more frustration than it is worth.  The iPhone 5S on the other hand has been found to work almost every single time and can easily be used single handed.  Since all that is necessary to get the iPhone to unlock is to place the registered finger on the home button it is fool proof when it comes to usability.

Both of the phones make registering a fingerprint or even multiple fingerprints simple.  For both phones you just have to go into their setting options and then follow the directions.  Being able to register multiple fingerprints means that you could hypothetically have multiple users for your phone if you want to give your spouse or children their own access.

One of the big factors to keep in mind with the Samsung Galaxy S5 is that is it not ideal for those with small fingers.  This may sound absurd but using the Samsung is nearly impossible if you have a small fingerprint since the sensor will not recognize that you are trying to use it if you cannot cover the entire sensor surface.  Since you have to cover the entire sensor for it to function it will again usually require that you swipe multiple times before it will finally unlock the phone.  Those with smaller fingers may find it extremely difficult to meet this requirement making this phone very frustrating.  For those that decide they still want the Samsung Galaxy S5 anyway it is possible to enroll your thumbprint.  However, using your thumb as your sensor again makes it difficult to unlock single handed and will require the use of both hands.

In the end it is clear that the iPhone 5S has the better sensor.  It is easy to set up and it is easy to utilize.  You’ll be able to use the sensor single handedly without any problems and you’ll never find yourself having to scan your finger multiple times before it recognizes the print.
